The Taiwan Environmental Protection Union received the President's
Butterfly Cultural Award in recognition of their contribution to Taiwan
during the past 17 years. Wild at Heart was invited to join the 17 October 2005 ceremony. Robin Winkler, director of the Wild at Heart Legal Defense Association, made the following remarks:
The refusal or inability of business and government to act in an environmentally responsible way has created the need for groups like the Taiwan Environmental Protection Union.
Since 1988, Taiwan's first year out from under the yoke of 39 years of martial law, they have tirelessly sought to balance the myth of the so-called "economic miracle" with activities and information on how the environmental and social costs of that miracle will be reflected in economic costs to be borne by future generations of our own and other species.
Congratulations on a well-deserved award.
