Reuters Report on Taiwan's Humpback Dolphins

It's not often that Taiwan's small remaining population of humpback dolphins gets a mention in the mainstream press, so when it does, it's always best to get the facts as straight as humanly possible:

1. The estimated number of dolphins in the population is 102 (not 120).

2. Neither Wild at Heart nor the Formosa Cetus Research and Conservation Group has identified illegal fishing of the dolphins for high-end meals as a threat.

3. The major threats also include

1) habitat destruction by land reclamation and

2) reduction of freshwater flow to estuaries. Neither group has identified wastewater from a reservoir as a threat.

4. The dolphin meat found by the Council of Agriculture in 1996 included that of dolphin species other than the humpback dolphin.
